About Samuel Burton

  • Biography
I have been painting for about ten years. I enjoy painting landscapes and cityscapes using various styles and mediums. I also enjoy figurative subjects, I like the challenge of integrating a figure into a landscape. I also like to paint abstract works which do derive from an actual landscape or scene and often finish up being semi abstract. Below is a review of my work from an esteemed American Art critic Alan Katz

Painters Who Just Painted While The Art World Burned

Sam Burton. "You reason color more than you reason drawing... Color has a logic as severe as form." Pierre Bonnard
"Great art is the outward expression of an inner life in the artist, and this inner life will result in his personal vision of the world." Edward Hopper

The painter who goes out into the world and experiences it with their whole being, will return to the studio with engraved impressions of their inner soul that portrays not the exterior objective vision , but the personal, internal psycho drama of our relationship with the world around us. That there are endless worlds made real by never ending interpretations is the reason for self expression. We each find ourselves in the world and the world in us. There is no objective truth, only the strength or weakness of our imaginations and our subjective interpretation. Painters who paint for the pleasure of their senses , know that expression is a higher goal than a canned technique that denies expression. The soul of the painter finds it's way, through a bold interaction with nature that puts them inside and interactive with the scene, not aloof and removed from it. English painter Sam Burton goes deep into his subject matter and finds himself in the process. Burton transforms what he sees into what he feels, within the context of personal psychology. Throughout his process he is editing to best subordinate what is important to him. Color , composition , perspective, form all become personalized expressions. The objective reality remains, but is transformed. Burton reminds us what painting is all about. Not copying or imitation , not adherence to academic rules or prerequisites. Art is about personal expression and the visual power and uniqueness of the individual. Paintings are not meant to look like photographs or copying exercises. Paintings are about paint on a surface and how the effect makes us feel. Burton proves the benefit of a detached spirit from the expectations of the art world. He allows us into his world rather than us accepting him into ours. He is a young painter who is on the right track . Burton lives in the small english town of Wakefield, which is his passionate subject matter. Coming from a family of artists he learned early the necessity of a personal vision. He imparts a deep meaning to places he knows so well that they are a part of his being. It is exciting see a young painter with such expressive gifts.
