About Linda Barlow

Biography

My work is predominantly textile based, looking at women's position in contemporary society, and has been exhibited worldwide. Wanting to produce a range of smaller, more affordable pieces to satisfy public demand, I have developed a range of collagraph prints and some pieces which combine watercolour and stitched textile. For me, it is the image which is important, the meaning of what I want to say, rather than the technique. I love observing people as they go about their busy lives and try and capture those fleeting "ordinary" moments, meeting a friend for coffee, walking in the park, playing with the children. These images, when isolated, make us wonder about the back-story, why are those people there and why are they doing that? I then imagine a whole scenario about those people and produce more work, so that they might sail away into the future with that person they just smiled at, or get on a different bus and leave the city forever. I particularly like collagraph printing as it is a more painterly technique, no two images are the same and this offers great potential for experimentation.
