About Max Hojer Jacobsen

Biography

My Sculptures:

In the world of culture, one finds grand epic dramas that each in their own way tell stories of great emotions, of power, hatred, and betrayal, and of love, desire, and forgiveness. And then there are the comedies. Comedies have always been used either as tremendous slapstick theater to relieve the pressure of a stressful and, for some, very harsh daily life, or as emotionally more refined pieces that make us laugh but also call for our compassion. By holding up a mirror to us, they show us as human beings of flesh and blood, with both good and bad sides. Max Højer Jacobsen’s tumbler belongs in this latter category. And when I write ”he”, it is because this small, chubby bronze creature is undeniably a man with quite an eye for women, as well as for a beer or a little tipple now and then. He is certainly in an exceptionally good mood when he has a bottle more or less firmly planted in his hand.

However, one should not be fooled by this. Max Højer Jacobsen’s figure is more multidimensional than that. Granted, he is happy—sometimes effusive—as a father, a friend, an animal lover, and a spouse. He is also a dreamer with a longing for faraway places. A dreamer who wants it all, wanting to leave his earthly shell and fly up toward the stars to fulfill his childhood soul's desire for total, unlimited freedom. At the same time, he is realist enough to realize that things do not always turn out that way. If you have a heart, it can be broken. When taking stock of life—which our hero often does—you see that sorrows accompany joys.

One of the figures is titled ”Livets store balancegang” (Life’s Great Balancing Act), and that hits the nail right on the head. It serves both as a statement of a basic human condition and as a keyword to Max Højer Jacobsen’s art. It is all about finding the balance. If you are a natural optimist who focuses on the positive aspects of life rather than the inevitable darker sides—as our man fully does—you do not just get a better life. You also become a better person for your friends, your family, and everyone you come into contact with.

My Paintings: I paint humorous, colorful, and contemporary pictures that capture the overlooked moments of everyday life. I breathe new life into the familiar and invite you to see routines in a new light.

Humor and recognizability are at the core of my work. I capture the contrasts of modern life with brushstrokes that balance between the realistic and the caricatured.

My works celebrate the imperfect and remind us that the best moments are found in the simple things.
