About KAZUHIKO

Biography

Hello, My name is Kazu (Kazuhiko Kakegawa), and I am an artist currently based in Japan. I started my career immediately after graduating from art college in 1989, and I have been working ever since. My theme: In the realm of art, the term "drawing" has a profound and abstract meaning. Exploring the question "What is drawing?" has been, and will continue to be, the central theme of my work—from the day I first chose the path of art until today and into the future. My Evolution: To delve deeper into this theme, I shifted my artistic style from oil painting to printmaking, and then to video installations in my twenties and thirties. After a decade of experimental creation and exhibition, I returned to oil painting around 2005. I incorporated the insights I gained during that period into my work, and I have since settled into my current style. What kind of work do I hope to create in the future? My aspiration is to create works of such high quality and density that their value increases with each viewing, allowing viewers to discover something new with each viewing. I would be delighted if these works found their way into the hands of art lovers everywhere.

Awards

2014

The Jury Special Prize at the ‘Japanese Painting 2014’

An open call exhibition organised by a major Japanese gallery, open exclusively to two-dimensional paintings. Although most of the entries were large-scale works with sides exceeding 100 cm, I didn’t let that bother me and submitted a small-scale work measuring 40 cm.
