About KAZUHIKO

Biography

Hello. My name is KAZUHIKO (Kazuhiko Kakegawa). I am an artist currently based in Japan. I began my career immediately after graduating from art college in 1989, and have been working as an artist ever since. My theme: In the world of art, the term ‘drawing’ carries a profound and abstract meaning. Exploring the question ‘What is drawing?’ has been, and will continue to be, the unwavering central theme of my work—from the very day I embarked on my artistic journey to the present day, and into the future. To delve deeper into this theme, during my twenties and thirties, I shifted my artistic practice from oil painting to printmaking, and then on to video installations. Following a decade of experimental production and exhibition centred on the exploration of drawing, I returned to oil painting around 2005. Since then, I have established my current artistic style. What kind of work I hope to create in the future: My aspiration is to produce works of quality and depth, such that each viewing reveals something new and each encounter adds fresh layers of meaning to their value. I sincerely hope that such works will find their way into the hands of all those who truly love art.

Awards

2014

The Jury Special Prize at the ‘Japanese Painting 2014’

An open call exhibition organised by a major Japanese gallery, open exclusively to two-dimensional paintings. Although most of the entries were large-scale works with sides exceeding 100 cm, I didn’t let that bother me and submitted a small-scale work measuring 40 cm.
