About Ruth Cowell
Biography
I've drawn and painted for as long as I can remember. Colour and pattern have helped shape my figurative compositions. I work in my studio at home in East Sussex where I look onto fields and wooded hills. My surroundings have inspired me whether flowers in the garden, trees in the woods or fruit on the table. I work from drawings and photographs and often find ideas when on holiday - this years' trips to Shropshire, France and Greece have given me plenty of material.
Influences on my work range from seventeenth century Spanish still life , Gustav Klimt, Edward Hopper and David Hockney. My paintings take a long time to produce, I build the colours up in thin layers of oil paint, subtly blending where necessary and never being afraid to change something if the composition is not working. I do hope you enjoy looking at my work as much as I've enjoyed creating it.
