About John Campbell

Biography

During my twenties I occasionally dabbled in watercolours, without much success. In 1982 I made a concentrated effort to improve my technique. Things began to click with my technique improving dramatically, and by 1983 I had my first exhibition at Leeds Playhouse. In 1985 I decided to take the plunge, by leaving my job and taking up full time painting. The inspiration for my paintings comes firstly from my love of watercolours as a medium and secondly from my love of the mountains. I've been a keen and active climber ever since I was first bitten by the bug in 1969. Over the past 28 years I've had several one-man exhibitions and have been involved in many group exhibitions. My work is also continuously on display in several private galleries throughout Cumbria. In 1989 I achieved my lifelong ambition of moving permanently to the Lake District. After several years in the Mountain Painters Gallery in Patterdale and Sharp Edge Gallery in Keswick, I opened Stoddah Farm Studio, adjacent to my home.
