Biography
Lena Med is a Ukrainian contemporary artist based in Brno, Czech Republic. She graduated from the Transcarpathian Academy of Arts in Uzhhorod, where she studied from 2014 to 2018.
Working primarily with oil on canvas, Med creates figurative and animal paintings that explore the emotional connection between humans, animals and their inner worlds. Horses, dogs and birds appear throughout her work not simply as subjects, but as symbolic figures expressing freedom, vulnerability, loyalty, transformation and inner strength.
Her visual language combines contemporary expressive realism with elements of symbolism. Realistic figures emerge from expressive, often undefined spaces created through intuitive brushwork, layered colour and contrasts of light and shadow. By removing a specific physical setting, Med shifts attention from narrative place to emotional state.
A recurring theme in her work is the human–animal bond and the idea of animals as mirrors of human experience. Some works explore identity and memory, while others address freedom, choice, relationships, transformation and the search for inner harmony.
Med’s aim is to create paintings that work on two levels: as visually compelling representations of animals and figures, and as emotional spaces in which viewers can recognise something of their own experience.
Her work has been exhibited in the Czech Republic, including Open ART Fest in Prague, and has been selected for multiple Artfinder Editors’ Picks. She currently lives and works in Brno.
