Biography
Born in 1989, Faizal Yunus is a Malaysian-based artist who works mainly in printmaking, painting, and installation. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Mara University of Technology (UiTM) in 2012, majoring in printmaking. Growing up surrounded by nature,
Faizal developed a unique imagination and interpretation of the greenery around him, which continues to influence his artistic journey. His belief in autonomy and an egalitarian society drives him to adapt the banal practices of everyday life into his art-making process.
For his first solo exhibition, Matrix (2016), he began drawing inspiration from his daily life, seeking to break free from the limitations of conventional art materials. Vortex (2018) revolved around his search for different perspectives on the causes behind his decision-making, serving as a poetic reflection on the state of pollution and humanity’s role in disrupting the beauty of our landscapes. Inbetween Worlds (2024) explores the tension between the rural landscapes of Faizal’s childhood in Kuala Lipis, Pahang, and the industrial urbanism of his current life in Selangor.
His current work continues to blend abstract and realism, focusing on the contrasts between nature and industry. Faizal’s unique use of industrial materials, such as car paint, further enhances this juxtaposition, reflecting the complex interaction between natural environments and man-made structures.
His awards include the Malaysian Emerging Artists Award (MEAA) in 2019, organized by HOM & Galeri Chandan, Kuala Lumpur. He also completed the Southeast Asian Artist Residency Program at Rimbun Dahan, Selangor, in 2018. Selected exhibitions include Malaysian Art, A New
Perspective (2017), Richard Koh Fine Art, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and S.E.A. FOCUS (2020), Gillman Barracks, Singapore.
