My work looks at the idea of place in the urban environment and our relation to it in terms of history and identity.  I spend a lot of time walking around and through London (the city where I live and work), for work, on errands as well as just pleasure and curiosity and am interested in how the city is constantly evolving; familiar buildings and spaces vanish and almost instantly forgotten.  I am interested in the idea of these landmarks – the structures we use to identify the areas we inhabit and how we negotiate our way through them.  A lot of these walks focus on the river and I have recently been travelling further afield through the industrial landscape of the Thames Estuary.
Most of the prints that I make are drypoints and monotypes. I combine drypoints with mezzotint which is an engraving technique using a special tool called a mezzotint rocker.  The image is made by scraping and burnishing back the image giving strong darks and lights and a wonderful tonal variation in the prints.

In addition to printing I also paint mostly in oils on canvas, board and paper.  This is an exciting development for me both in terms of the painting but also in how approach my printmaking.
