About Hannah Battershell

Biography

I am a professional artist living and working in Bristol.

My exhibition history includes various group shows at Thrown Contemporary (London), GX Gallery (London) and solo shows at Curwen Gallery (London), and The Rectory Gallery (London). My work has featured in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions 2011, 2013 and 2014 and The Other Art Fair in London and Bristol.

The abiding mood of my work is one of dark playfulness and eerie beauty. It usually has a strong sense of narrative and humour. The pieces are sometimes miniature, always detailed; my aim is for the work to draw the viewer in closer as a book might.

Subjects include dreamscapes, ruins, other worlds, optical trick images, still life and interior scenes. I am inspired by, amongst many other things, Indian miniature paintings, Japanese screens, Medieval illuminations, the work of Louise Bourgeois, Edward Gorey, William Blake, Tove Jansson, wild places, the things I read, dreams.

My technique of choice is usually collage; I am a lifelong paper obsessive and have amassed a collection of pieces hailing from all over the world. I am continually fascinated by this material's potential and its associations with the world of books, another passion of mine. I am also increasingly using printmaking techniques in my work including cyanotype, collagraph and drypoint.
