About Charles BEALL

Biography

Creating art is something I have to do. It isn’t simply an occupation or a pastime, but a creative necessity, and I now devote myself to it full-time from my studio in Valencia, Spain.

I came to art late, and by surprise. One day I found my daughter and her six-year-old neighbour making art together. The piece the friend created was so striking that I asked myself whether I could make something that cool. I’ve been making art ever since, and in 2026 it became my full-time work. Before that, I spent 42 years creating and running the National Academic Championship.

My work consists primarily of geometric abstract reliefs combining painted wood, found and weathered materials, and gold, silver and copper leaf. I’m fascinated by the relationships between shape, colour, texture and dimension, and by the challenge of achieving visual harmony through both simplicity and complexity. I find particular satisfaction in transforming discarded wood into something beautiful and unexpected, keeping the grain, nail holes and worn paint that record its past life. Many of my titles come from music and architecture: Counterpoise, Nocturne, Fermata, Elevation.

I want my work to be seen, appreciated and lived with in homes and offices beyond my own walls. In November 2026, six of my works are being shown in an exhibition in Florence, Italy.
