About Carmel Reilly

Biography

Hello, I'm Carmel and I live in Subiaco, Perth Western Australia. I have a small studio in my garden, where the painting happens. I have always been drawn to the creative arts. Colour is the driving force in my work and is really what excites me about creating. It's emotive power continually intrigues me and provides limitless possibilities. The Fauves and Expressionism made a significant impact on me as I was fascinated with their many variations and unusual combinations of colours. I capture the essence of my experiences through colour, line, gesture and form. I use layers of colour in a free flowing organic way and then work over areas adding expression as well as structure through drawing into the work, aiming to balance the elements together. I use a range of mediums, but favour acrylic paints, charcoal, oil pastel, graphite, gesso that is drawn into to add elements of texture and interest. Expression is important and keeps me interested in finding my way through the creative process. I feel my work is recognisable as distinctly mine I approach my work with a desire to create pieces that ignite a connection and draw the viewer in. An abstract style allows the freedom to express the seen and unseen, to transform my ideas visually without restraint.
