About Cheryl Harrison MA

Biography

“I’ve lived a little. I’ve travelled a lot. My work is an expression of life experiences good times and bad. I begin with a feeling and end wherever the music and the paint takes me.

I’m not trying to answer life’s riddles, it’s more like… this is how I’m feeling."

Cheryl Harrison is a contemporary Australian abstract artist with a career spanning over twenty-five years. Her practice is defined by an interaction between delicate mark-making and bold, gestural forms guided by an emotional response to her surroundings, travel and a sensitivity to music. Harrison works predominantly with acrylics, often incorporating pencil and marker to achieve complex textures. Her paintings feature layered tonal washes and intricate line work, utilizing sophisticated palette combinations.

In her formative years as an emerging artist, she relocated to the United Kingdom where her work was exhibited in prestigious galleries across London, Cambridge, and the coast of Cornwall, earning admiration from collectors around the globe. During her years in the south of the UK, Cheryl immersed herself in the vibrant artistic community, engaging with esteemed postmodern British artists like Sandra Blow, Terry Frost, and Barry Cooke. This international experience still informs her current perspective and has led to her work being featured in numerous corporate and private collections.

After returning to Australia, she earned her Master’s in Visual Arts at Griffith University and continued to evolve her practice with precision and emotional insight. She has since captivated audiences with solo exhibits in public and private galleries across Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns, and Port Douglas. Her studio is nestled in the tropical paradise of Port Douglas, Far North Queensland where she finds inspiration in the natural surroundings she shares with her husband and fellow abstract painter, Pez.

Each piece is shaped by decades of experience and an intuitive understanding of form, texture, and feeling. Her paintings reflect a profound connection to both medium and environment, creating with a sense of presence and authenticity. Her pieces are unique, high quality and absolutely collectable.

For Cheryl, art is not about solving life’s mysteries—it’s about honouring how it feels to live them.
