About Lara Cobden

  • Biography
I hope there is both a stillness and fluidity in my work; in the ordinary - a sense of reverence. Found fragments and natural objects become ‘jewel-like’, the act of painting slows down the process of looking, reinterpreting their context and narrative, imbibing new and ambiguous meaning. Paintings evolved from remembered landscapes and casual snapshots, shimmer and shift in and out of focus, both misty and precise. This balance is also contained within the composition of a painting; presence and absence.

The thread pulling this work together is about 'coming home', belonging; or conversely a sense of 'unbelonging'.

ING Discerning Eye Exhibition - Selected by Elmo Hood

    Crossroads - 30cmx30cm

The ING Discerning Eye Exhibition is a show of small works independently selected by six prominent figures from different areas of the art world: two artist, two collectors and two critics. Work is selected from open submission and with works by artists invited by the individual selectors. Each section is hung separately to give each its own distinctive identity. The impression emerges of six small exhibitions within the whole. It provides an unusual opportunity for works by lesser-known artists to be hung alongside contributions from internationally-recognised names.

The exhibition will be open from 16 - 26 November 2017 at the Mall Galleries, London, with an Artists' Private View on Thursday 16 November.
