About Abi Moffat

Biography

I’m an artist based in Hastings, East Sussex, where I live and work from my studio.
Specialising in abstract painting, I adopt a spontaneous, process-led approach. I have a fascination with the material qualities of paint and how colour, texture and gesture can evoke a sense of place or capture a feeling without directly depicting a recognisable scene. Working primarily with acrylic paint, oil bar, and collage, I instinctively apply and layer materials, to build expressive, vivid surfaces.

I also often incorporate collage into my work, to blend subtle moments of familiarity with abstraction. Art first became an important part of my life through my experience of mental health, and it continues to be a meaningful way for me to process and express things that can be difficult to articulate in words. This personal connection informs the intuitive nature of my practice.

My influences also include the depth and richness of Renaissance painting to the expressive freedom of the Abstract Expressionists. Artists such as Frank Bowling, Rembrandt, Lee Krasner and Mil Ceulemans inspire my processes and work.
Travel also plays an important role in shaping my practice. Immersion in vibrant cultures and landscapes expands my palette and informs the compositions I create on the surface.
