Midnight Lights (2024) Original Mixed-media Painting by Abi Moffat

An original mixed-media painting on canvas, inspired by the rich, regal colours of the Renaissance and a love for this movement, combined with the emotive expression of abstraction. As the layers and materials built up, I saw a cityscape emerge beneath a night sky.
A deep blue palette sweeps across the upper half of the composition, contrasted by flashes of gold, copper and crimson that cut through the lower half. Collaged magazine imagery is layered into the surface, with the painted elements obscuring, transforming and blending the sourced images into the surrounding composition. The boundaries between painting and collage, reality and illusion dissolve, creating an ambiguous visual space.
