Wildfires are raging all around us. Sometimes literally. Many areas now look like a desolate plain with the occasional charred tree. Anyone who sees this can hardly imagine that anything will ever grow there again. Yet nature is remarkably resilient. There are small patches that remain unburned, where small animals can take shelter — lizards, snakes. After the Strabrechtse Heide fire - in my own neighbourhood Heeze - fire-site mushrooms and the coffee-fire fungus suddenly appear, thriving in warm soil. However, they don’t belong there and damage the root systems of trees. The moor grass, a type of grass, also grows luxuriantly there and crowds out the purple coloured heather. Not a happy outcome, even though it looks green.
Sometimes, an area can benefit from controlled (!) wildfires. Fires offer opportunities for regeneration if the seeds in the soil survive, or for improving an area by, for example, planting deciduous saplings and aspen trees. Is the impact of a wildfire then really not that bad? Perhaps, if it involves a small area without unique, endangered plants and animals. However, due to climate change, fires are becoming more frequent and, above all, more intense. Firefighters are at risk, people are forced to evacuate, and rare plants and animals are disappearing. Fire has an enormous impact — one that is often underestimated. Rising temperatures, record-breaking droughts, and wildfires threaten dikes, shipping, agriculture and horticulture, water and energy supplies, as well as flora and fauna. In short, the consequences of a disrupted climate are by no means trivial and affect the very future of our existence. Let's take care to enjoy nature.
