Unexpected find (2024) Original Oil Painting by Victoria Udalova

60 x 60 x 2cm (unframed) / 60 x 60cm (actual image size)

£896.82

The girl is absorbed in digging the sand with her sandal. For her, it is an ordinary childhood game, one of the countless activities on the beach. But unexpectedly, an object appears from the sand that does not belong there — a hand grenade.

The work speaks about the fact that war does not always remain on the front line. Its traces penetrate everyday life, into places we are used to thinking of as safe. Even the beach, a symbol of rest, childhood, and carefree summer days, can carry the memory of violence.

The contrast between the child’s concentrated figure, the bright sunlight, and the military object emphasizes the fragility of our sense of safety. What only a moment ago was a game suddenly becomes an encounter with a reality that no one can foresee.

In this work, I use fluid acrylic, a stencil to create the effect of waves, and oil paints.

Materials used:

acrylic, oil on canvas
