There is something extraordinary about the quiet confidence of a lion.

With Quiet Authority, I wanted to portray strength without aggression — the calm, dignified presence of an animal that does not need to demonstrate its power.

The lion’s upward gaze became the emotional centre of the work. His expression is peaceful yet commanding, while the subtle green-grey eyes create an immediate connection with the viewer.

The magnificent mane was built gradually through many layers of professional artist-quality soft pastel. Thousands of individual strokes combine warm golden and earthy tones with silver, grey and soft cream, allowing areas of the mane to emerge from and disappear into the deep black background.

I wanted to preserve a sense of natural movement rather than making every strand perfectly controlled. Softer passages and loose flyaway hairs contrast with the highly detailed face, giving the portrait a living, atmospheric quality.

For me, realism is not simply about reproducing every detail. I aim to capture something of the animal’s individuality, character and spirit — a presence that can be felt as well as seen.
