The Injured Dragon (2025) Original Oil Painting by Ryan Louder

A 36x48 painting in acrylic ink, charcoal and oil of a stable boy caring for an injured dragon after a battle. The soldier who rode the dragon is carried off on a stretcher, injured or dead - the boy dabs the dragon's eye with water, and the tenderness between them is the whole point of the picture.

There were no sketches. A few strokes of burnt umber and the dragon was simply there. I see dragons a lot now - I don't know why. I'm not into computer games or much fantasy beyond the popular stuff like Game of Thrones. They just appear as I paint, the same way everything else in my work does. I have narcolepsy with REM intrusion, diagnosed at Guy's Hospital in London: dream imagery shows up while I'm awake, and paintings like this are where it lands.
