The Cycle (2024) Original Oil Painting by Ryan Louder

The Cycle is a large original oil painting on canvas, 118 x 92 cm (46.5 x 36 inches), by London artist Ryan Louder. The whole canvas burns - yellow, orange and dull crimson expanding from a turbulent centre, with figures resolving inside the flames only where the paint has been laid in distinct colours.

This painting is part of a body of work shaped by my neurological condition - Narcolepsy with REM Intrusion Hallucinations, clinically confirmed via MSLT at Guy's Hospital, London. Fire scenes like this are not planned; they surface as I paint.

Neuroaesthetic markers present: embedded figures inside the fire, a reaching arm, a woman with raised arms above the flames, a prone form with a winged thing lifting from it; chimeric fusion, bodies and flame sharing boundaries so figures dissolve back into the heat; consumed boundary, form edges eaten by atmosphere; warm monochrome palette characteristic of hypnagogic light.

These markers are not deliberate artistic techniques but direct visual recordings of what REM intrusion hallucinations look like. The imagery emerges from neurological experience, not metaphor. I have painted over 2,000 works, with over 1,000 originals sold.
