The rough-lipped darkling beetle (Eleodes hispilabris) is a flightless beetle that is known for standing on its head and releasing a foul-smelling liquid when it feels threatened. It lives in arid environments, dry regions, and deserts. The one that inspired this study calls my gavel driveway its home. Its diet is decaying and decomposing plant material. I can't help but find them fascinating.
