Crowned by Light explores the quiet strength, dignity and commanding presence of the lion through a combination of detailed realism and expressive mark-making.

The lion's face is rendered primarily in pastel, with particular attention given to the eyes, expression and subtle textures of the fur. In contrast, the mane develops into freer, energetic passages of gold acrylic, creating a striking transition between realism and abstraction.

I wanted the gold to suggest more than the natural colour of the mane. Against the deep black background, it becomes almost a crown of light — reflecting the lion's powerful yet composed presence.

The contrast between the carefully observed face and spontaneous metallic brushwork gives the artwork a different character depending on the light and viewing distance. From close up, individual pastel marks and textures become visible; from across a room, the golden mane creates a dramatic presence against the dark ground.
