Alqantara

A lone minaret stands among ruins, a survivor in a devastated landscape. The view is imagined, but the painting takes its name from a street in Gaza City. A bold border patterned with yellow and white squares surrounds the scene, a bright, decorative frame around a sombre subject.

Alqantara belongs to a series exploring the image of a single tower emerging from destruction, a symbol of hope, endurance and renewal.

About the idea
I’m drawn to the way a surviving building gains meaning simply by remaining. These structures stand as landmarks of both loss and strength, reminders that even in devastation there is the possibility of rebuilding and remembrance.

About the making
The painted border was made by spraying paint through an anti-slip rug mat, which gives the squares their pattern and the edge a tactile, handmade quality.
