Harvesting treasured apples (oneself in time or mother and daughter) (2016) Original Acrylic Painting by Phyllis Mahon
30 x 40 x 0.5cm (unframed) / 30 x 40cm (actual image size)
£250
Original artwork description
Reaching to the largest, brightest fruit on the lower branches, a young woman stands on tip-toe and lifts her transparent, gauzy dress.
She is accompanied by her mother, her spirit, a memory of another time or her second self? Her hands, and gaze, mirror hers.
I've added gold detail in the coloured dress, its shiny quality is visible in one of the photographs taken at an angle. Their dresses become as one; the pink, blue and gold of the foreground figure is cradled by the transparent paleness of the other.
I've included a series of photographs of the progression - originally it was going to simply be a painting of a woman reaching to a fruit tree - an expression of a natural treasure - I'd been inspired by watching my daughter picking apples from a tree in our garden, but as I worked another figure made its presence felt, a shadow at first, then it became an older woman, now, finally the two figures are a similar age so I feel she is remembering her mother.
Painted on canvas covered board, I've retained areas of the natural canvas and chose the subtle blue, pink and gold to contrast / complement this neutral background.
Unframed but ready to hang (with little hangers on the reverse); sent by tracked delivery.
I'm selling it unframed so the purchaser can frame it to suit the home decor; I've created Computer Generated Images to show how it might appear framed dark but it would look equally good in a pale frame.
Sent by Tracked delivery with aCertificate of Authenticity.
