Biography
ABOUT ME
I was born in rural N. Ireland and began exhibiting my artworks professionally when I graduated from Belfast College of Art in 1976, where I studied Fine Art Painting, then took a postgraduate course in Printmaking.
THE EARLY YEARS
from 1976 - 1992 were spent in London's East End at an exciting time when there was a lot of affordable studio space for the many artists working there. My home was my studio, based in a whole street of short-life housing for artists, enabling us to devote ourselves to our careers. My children saw that my work was part of my everyday life.
In 1993, I relocated to the Lincolnshire Wolds - its huge open skies and undulating landscape was so different to an inner city life. Suddenly, living surrounded by huge beech trees and seeing the moon captured in those branches subsequently inspired many of my works, but the introduction of landscape into my imagery did take some time to happen. My early works were figure-based, but the figure these days is more part of a landscape and painting the landscape itself is now important too.
In the late 1980s I was proud to be one of 7 artists representing Northern Ireland at Fung Ping Shan Museum in Hong Kong. In 1998, Mount Berry College, U.S.A. hosted a large solo exhibition of my work.
I’ve been the lucky recipient of two Arts Council Awards - in 1977 to set up a darkroom to produce photographic Cibachrome prints and in 2003 to learn stone-carving - a superb ‘mid-career’ boost in time for my 50th birthday!
