  • What Inspires Art?

    What Inspires Art?

I was thrilled to be included in a beautiful publication titled “What Inspired Art?” collated by a Lincolnshire based writer and lecturer called Kevin Byron. This is a photo of my page … It is a compilation of 110 artists’ stories on how how they worked during lockdown. The book can be bought directly from Kevin via his facebook page. The painting is in my Artfinder shop - see post lower down this page. My page reads so … ‘Diaphanous Autumn Moon’ by Phyllis Mahon. ‘Diaphanous Autumn Moon’ is perhaps the image that best illustrates how I feel about my life right now - content and grateful. This night scene of a woman receiving the jewelled light of the crescent moon was painted in 2021. Throughout lockdown my day to day life didn’t change very much because I have always worked from home. The creation of this one however was special for me. This was because my son - a picture framer who works in London - sent a box of small framed wooden panels as a gift, as he knew we weren’t able to meet up as normal. When I had moved from the city to the Lincolnshire Wolds thirty years ago, it took me a very long time to get used to living in an open landscape. These early feelings of isolation diminished as the years passed, and I’ve lately come to realise how comforting it is to live surrounded by huge beech trees, and to follow the journey of the moon and planets in the clear night skies. Here, this woman delights in the moon’s light and in feeling the cool, damp grass on her bare feet. My quote is from an ENYA song … “My Light shall be the Moon, and my Path the Ocean. My Guide the Morning Star, as I sail home to you … ”

Waiting for the Night ~ Flora

Waiting for the Night ~ Flora

This painting was first created in 2013, and I made some changes to it recently (July 2023), adding lots of flowers in the foreground and some “memories and thoughts” flowing out from the woman’s closed eyes, as she turns to kiss her lover. I always loved it but had planned to make it into a diptych either horizontally or vertically but the time was never right. However, my garden was so full of flowers this year that one day a few weeks ago, I thought … this is it … I know what’s needed … flowers ~ Achillea, Nigellas … and I love it even more now. Hence the subtitle title Flora. It has been bought by a lovely couple who live nearby where I live in Lincolnshire - they’ve been collectors of my paintings for some years; I think this is their sixth! I sat quietly with a coffee this morning, quietly saying goodbye to Flora and her lover while I waited for their visit.

Love, Landscape, Seasons and a Crescent Moon

Love, Landscape, Seasons and a Crescent Moon

A large acrylic on canvas in the centre called Red Rain, showing a pensive woman, a feeling, a memory - inspired by the song of the same name. Two more recent watercolours on handmade paper are on either side of it, the left one titled The Way You Make Me Feel ... a woman glowing in gold and in pale moonlight. Both of these watercolours are in a private collection in USA! To the extreme right and left, are two 'pebble' shaped hand-painted vases depicting the Four Seasons (these can be seen on p19 of my shop with other decorative boxes and stone carvings).

    First Days of March 2022

    First Days of March 2022

The very last days of February and the first days of March, saw me working on the lovely handmade Indian paper but it's white this time as opposed to the dark grey that formed most of my watercolours since I discovered it in 2016! I wanted to celebrate the colour turquoise and so here's a woman dreaming and breathing it. Then I decided to create a mirror image, and this is two hearts in yellow and blue, flowing free, rising, inspired by, and in empathy with the people of Ukraine. This drawing SOLD in the Artfinder ART FOR PEACE Collection, with 100% of the proceeds going to Artfinder's chosen charity SUNFLOWER OF PEACE to help people in Ukraine. Thank you Artfinder and thank you buyer in NE England :-)

The end of 2021 ... Diaphanous Autumn Moon

A photo of my last painting of 2021 taken, in progress, against the backdrop of the wonderful trees in my garden. I love looking out of my window in the night, sometimes to see the moon cradled in these large beech trees. Update … this painting is now framed in a beautiful tulipwood tray-frame. See listing in first pages of my shop
