A leopard moves silently through tall grass, its body emerging from the darkness with an intense yet composed presence.

In Through Golden Grass, I wanted to capture the extraordinary combination of strength, elegance and quiet concentration found in one of the world's most elusive big cats. The lowered head and focused gaze suggest a fleeting moment of movement, as though the animal has just appeared from the shadows.

The leopard itself is rendered in highly detailed soft pastel, with carefully layered marks used to build the texture, pattern and subtle variations of its coat. In contrast, the surrounding vegetation is expressed more freely with metallic gold acrylic, creating energetic, almost abstract strokes against the deep black Pastelmat.

I particularly enjoy the contrast between these two approaches: the controlled realism of the animal and the expressive quality of the golden grasses. As the viewing angle and light change, the metallic areas subtly catch the light, giving the original artwork a quality that cannot be fully reproduced in photographs.

The black background allows the leopard to emerge dramatically from the darkness while the gold introduces warmth, movement and a contemporary element to the traditional wildlife portrait.
