Provence
Acrylic and structural paste on canvas
A sleeping face sits at the centre of this painting, eyes closed, calm. From the head, long white and pale grey strokes sweep upward and open out into a pair of wings, so the shelter around her has grown from her own body. I built the surface with structural paste worked in by hand, leaving ridges and fine channels that hold the light and give the movement real texture you can feel up close.
The lower part of the canvas is dark and broken, streaked with violet — the element she is lifted above rather than pulled into. Everything else stays in white, silver-grey and warm sand, so the darkness sits low and the eye travels up.
I called it Provence for the light and the violet running through it, and for that state of being wrapped up and safe, suspended between the dark below and the open sky.
This is a large statement piece and it needs space around it — a wide wall, a bedroom, a quiet hallway, somewhere it can be the first thing you see. It arrives ready to hang.
