The horse, elegant, powerful. One of the most stable characters in art over time. Free from control, the riderless horse is the embodiment of unrestrained natural energy, a free spirit prefigures Romanticism 's celebration of nature. Inspired by George Stubb's Whislejacket.
I have a lovely memory of my father’s final horse show. The so-called Abraham Show. Together with my son, who was about eight at the time, I went to watch – something I didn’t normally do, but this show jumping competition was nearby and special.
With admiration and bated breath, we watched the jumps. What unity between horse and rider. Relief: clear and fast, good enough for first prize!
My father wasn’t just a very sporty dad and grandad, with a great sense of humour; he was also very kind and much loved. Also his horses adored him.
