kokin (2023) Original Mixed-media Painting by Olivia Gozzano

20 x 20 x 1cm (unframed)

£291.75

Believe everything has an opposite, and that the two need each other in order to exist. Matter and antimatter, light and dark, presence and absence: in this work I wanted to give that tension a visible form. The same maple leaves appear twice, as a positive pattern woven into the figure and as a pale negative in the world around her, almost two states of the same substance that can never occupy the same place.
Time is the other thread running through the piece. A negative is a trace, an image suspended between what was and what remains. I like the idea that the woman stands at the point where the two meet, between a moment and its echo. The complementary colours, turquoise and red, work the same way: they do not blend, they intensify each other. I’ve combined an image of a Kokin with a photograph I took of maple branches and leaves. This work is a smaller version of a painting I did in a larger format.
