Fractured Stillness (2025) Original Ink Drawing by Nicol Vacaru

Fractured Stillness is an original black ink drawing on paper depicting an abstract female profile through expressive, fragmented brushstrokes.

I built the figure through separate ink gestures rather than a fixed outline, allowing the face to appear gradually from the movement of the marks.

Some areas are dense and dark, while others remain almost completely open. I wanted the figure to feel present but not entirely defined — as if part of it is still forming or disappearing.

The contrast between black ink and untouched paper creates both tension and calm, giving the work its balance between movement and stillness.
