Flowers for Two captures a small moment of affection and curiosity. A woman holds a brown dog close to her body while a bouquet of pink flowers appears beside them. Her gaze falls towards the animal; the dog, meanwhile, seems more interested in the flowers. This simple exchange gives the painting an immediate warmth while leaving the relationship between its three protagonists pleasantly open.

Shevchuk paints the scene with broad, exposed brushwork and deliberately economical modelling. The figurative image is organised against two large fields of grey and blue — a geometric division of the background that periodically appears in his portraits and introduces an abstract counterpoint to the recognisable subjects. Pink blossoms and vivid green leaves provide small bursts of colour against the restrained palette.

The work is characteristic of Shevchuk’s recent painting, in which expressionist handling and elements of naïve art are combined with increasingly concise and confident figurative compositions.
