Emerald Gaze is a highly detailed pastel portrait exploring the quiet intensity and captivating character of a cat.

The luminous green eyes immediately became the focus of this piece. Emerging from the deep black background, they create a striking connection with the viewer, while the subtle highlights across the face reveal the delicate structure and texture of the dark fur.

I deliberately allowed areas of the portrait to disappear gradually into the surrounding darkness. Rather than defining every part of the animal, this creates a sense of depth and atmosphere, drawing attention towards the expression, eyes and finely observed details of the face.

Built gradually through layers of professional artist-quality pastel, the artwork combines delicate individual hairs and whiskers with softer passages of shadow. The restrained palette of black, silver-grey and white allows the natural green of the eyes to become the dominant colour within the composition.

For me, Emerald Gaze is about the quiet presence animals can possess — a moment of stillness in which a simple gaze becomes remarkably expressive.
