Original artwork description
In Drift, a solitary face appears within a vast field of darkness, surrounded by layers of loose and expressive charcoal marks.
The diagonal position of the figure gives the portrait a subtle sense of movement, as though it is suspended or drifting through an undefined space. The face is recognisable, but the surrounding marks continuously break down its edges, allowing the figure to move between clarity and abstraction.
I wanted the work to convey a quiet, introspective atmosphere rather than a specific narrative. The contrast between the illuminated features and the surrounding darkness creates a feeling of isolation and suspension, while the visible charcoal gestures preserve the physical energy of the drawing process.
Charcoal allows me to work through repeated layers of drawing, erasing and reworking. These traces remain visible in the finished piece and become an essential part of the image.
Drift is an original, one-of-a-kind charcoal drawing on paper.
