About Sue Rapley

Biography

Hello and welcome! I am a contemporary artist, inspired by the wild beauty of the natural landscape, which I believe brings nourishment, joy and peace to our lives. Living just outside the historic city of Cambridge, with my husband, daughter, and our two border terriers, I work from a beautiful light-filled garden studio.

Inspiration for my work is found daily – from my walks with the dogs in the meadows near my home, to travelling further afield to the sea and coastline – I have always been fascinated with the ever-changing natural world around me. Exploring with all my senses, this is where my creative practice begins.

In the studio, the very act of painting is like a meditation practice as my mind becomes absorbed in the process. Painting predominately with oils, I translate these natural influences in an expressive way, using my visual memory and emotions to capture the essence of a moment in nature – to create a response, a feeling, an emotion. Building layers and textures with strokes of my palette knife I create movement and a sense of actually being there in the landscape. The collections of original paintings that I produce seek to capture a fusion of my vibrant colour palette, and a feeling of sensitivity with the viewer.

I am a member of Cambridge Open Studios, The Trove Cambridge and other local network groups. My watercolour work can also be seen in the highly acclaimed Cambridge Art Book.

I regularly host events from my studio, and welcome the opportunity to share my art with you in person. I would also love to connect with you on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, sharing my creative journey through my posts and conversations.
