Dancer (2020) Original Pastel Drawing by Rumen Sazdov

This pastel drawing is a celebration of the rhythm, passion and dramatic movement of Spanish flamenco dance in a balletic style. My intentionwas to capture the moment when the dancer surrenders fully to the music and her body becomes the very expression of emotion. The central motif is a dynamic vertical composition that leads the viewer's eye from the tip of the shoe to the open hand fan. The body is captured in a tense, theatrical position on tiptoe. The sharp angles of the arms and bent legs add tension and power to the image.
When creating on a toned background, I relied on expressive strokes with dry pastel. I deliberately let the natural brown color of the paper shine through, which acts as a warm halftone and connects the human body with the surrounding space. The contrast between the cool, deep blue background and the warm pink color of the costume creates a strong visual tension that underlines the drama of the entire scene.
