Colour Fold (2026) Original Mixed-media Painting by Abi Moffat

An original expressive abstract painting, built through layers of thickly applied acrylic paint, oil pigment sticks and magazine collage to create a richly textured, visceral surface.
Sweeping gestures of deep crimson, ultramarine and teal move across the canvas, contrasted by flashes of peach, pale yellow and softer blues. I worked back into the acrylic with ultramarine oil pigment sticks to deepen the colour and introduce further marks and texture. The lighter tones, mixed by hand, soften the intensity of the palette and create a sense of movement between the bolder gestures.
The work explores the physical qualities of paint, its viscosity, texture and capacity for expressive mark-making. Influenced in part by my experience assisting established artist Ptolemy Mann over the past few years, the painting embraces bold strokes, decisive movement and visible energy on the surface.
