CLAPTON HART 101 X 76 CMS

I made a drawing on Lower Clapton Road, London, UK.
I was standing outside the Clapton Hart Pub, as I was drawing the street scene, I couldn't help to notice, a woman was hanging around waiting for the bus. The Bus Stop is just at this location and so quite a few characters were hovering around, going into the pub or waiting for a bus. This young woman seemed anxious and she wrapped her hoodie up to her chin in an effort to protect herself from the chill in the air, I didn’t draw her on the spot but remembered the scene, this gesture of the hand pulling on the fabric seemed to add to the drama of the moment. The next day in the studio I wanted to depict this bustling street scene on Lower Clapton Road, capturing the vibrant energy of the space which brought so many people from the neighbourhood.
I was intending to focus on the play of light and shadows, and put several figures into the image, however this lone character seems to fill the space and so I left the composition in this way - a slice-of-life moment in the urban scene.
