Belt — “Healing” Series
This work is part of my “Healing” series, which examines difficult childhood experiences and the way they continue to exist in memory long after childhood has ended.
The belt is deliberately presented as an ordinary object. But within the context of the painting, its meaning changes. It becomes associated with punishment, fear and the moment when an everyday household object can acquire an entirely different significance in a child’s mind.
The work is not intended to illustrate violence literally. I am more interested in what remains afterwards: anticipation, tension, vulnerability and the emotional memory carried by the body.
By isolating the object and placing it within a painting, I remove it from its original context and give it a new one. What once represented fear becomes material for reflection and artistic transformation.
Within Healing, this painting is perhaps the most direct confrontation with the past. The purpose is not to recreate the trauma, but to acknowledge it, give it a visible form and ultimately take ownership of the story.
