About Daria Zavadenko

Biography

Daria Zavadenko is a contemporary landscape painter working primarily in oil with a palette knife. Her practice is guided by a simple observation: people rarely remember a landscape exactly as it was, but they often remember how it felt.

Rather than documenting a specific place, Zavadenko explores the way memory reshapes lived experience. Working through layered, textured surfaces, she draws light from restrained grounds, allowing luminosity to emerge gradually from deep, quiet tones. Her paintings inhabit the space where observation gives way to recollection, making landscape less a depiction of nature than an expression of emotional experience.

In her ongoing series, Atmospheric Studies, she explores a single visual structure across an expanding body of work: an active, shifting sky balanced by the stillness of the earth. Using a palette knife, she builds richly textured surfaces through bold, decisive gestures, allowing color to function as a language of memory rather than a tool of description. Each painting seeks not to describe a place, but to evoke a fleeting, deeply personal experience.

While her work often carries a quiet sense of melancholy, it is ultimately concerned with the persistence of memory and the emotions landscapes continue to hold long after the moment itself has passed. Rather than offering fixed narratives, her paintings invite viewers to recognize fragments of their own experiences, creating a personal dialogue between image, memory, and feeling.

Her paintings are held in private collections throughout Ukraine, the United States, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and China. In 2025, Zavadenko participated in the 10th All Ukrainian Painting Triennial, organized by the National Union of Artists of Ukraine. She has also been recognized among the Top 100 Most Collected and Favored Artists on Saatchi Art. Her work resonates with collectors who are drawn to landscapes that are remembered rather than merely observed.
