Event: Novi Lim: Fluidity In Nature
Dates: 11 Jul 2022 - 5 Aug 2022
Novi Lim is an acrylic painter working out of her studio in North Carolina, USA. Her art practice gives her a means of capturing the essence and subtle elements of the natural world. Her process allows for a lot of freedom, with soft curves, edges, and rhythmic brushstrokes taking shape upon the canvas. The initial flow of movement comes instinctively, followed by the delicate stage of contemplation, detailed work, and layering of different techniques to achieve textural contrast, dimension, and depth.
Novi's practice, both viewing the natural world and putting paint on canvas, allows for a deeper connection. The fluidity of nature finds its way into her psyche, and then out into the world as sensuous creations featuring dynamic line work, translucent atmospheric effects, and a play of light and dark that gives each of her works a quiet intensity.

Biography
I paint not to illustrate, but to express what exists beneath language. Each gesture is honest and unfiltered, shaped by memory, sensation, and a deep connection to the unseen inner world.
For me, abstraction is the ultimate gateway to a deeply personal visual language.
Each work is layered with hidden symbols, memories, and interpretations, echoes of innocence, heritage, nostalgia, beauty, nature, and even darkness. These elements are not always overt, but they are embedded in the gestures and choices I make. Every intentional mark I lay on the canvas, every stroke, pressure, tension, or burst of color, is a form of coded expression, whether through paint, brush, or unconventional tools.
I translate emotion into form, distilling complex inner worlds into simplified visual harmonies. My creative interest lies in capturing the spirit and nuances of both my internal landscape, the subconscious elements of memory, and the natural world.
I follow an instinctive rhythm in my process, guided by fluid curves, softened edges, and sweeping gestures. I often draw from nature’s graceful archetypes, elements that resemble aquatic, avian, and botanical forms, which serve as recurring muses. With intuitive movements, discovery occurs through the layering of different techniques, contrasting texture, and detail work that create depth.
I am often captivated by fleeting visual poetry, a bloom unfolding, the shifting hues of a sunset, or the glint of moonlight on water. These moments awaken a sense of wonder, pushing me into a flow state where intuition and expression converge.
Art, for me, is a sensorial and exploratory practice, an ongoing dialogue between intention and surrender. It is a space where I follow curiosity, embrace uncertainty, and translate the unseen into something tangible.
The act of creation allows me to honor my individuality while making space for transformation. Through dynamic line work, gradients, and the contrast of light and shadow, I aim to infuse each piece with a quiet, contemplative intensity.
Part of each sale will go toward helping neglected dogs and stray cats in my hometown. It is an issue that resonates deeply with me.
