I am a Dutch-born artist now living on Vancouver Island, Canada, where the dramatic coastline, forests and wildlife provide endless inspiration for my paintings. My work is rooted in realism and traditional painting techniques, with a particular love for wildlife and atmospheric landscapes. I have always been fascinated by the techniques of the Old Dutch Masters, especially their use of layered colour, light and fine detail, and I bring elements of those traditional methods into my own work. Living on Vancouver Island has given me the opportunity to study animals such as wolves, cougars, bears, owls and coastal birds in an environment that is both powerful and peaceful. My aim is not simply to reproduce an animal or landscape, but to capture a moment, a mood and the character of the subject. Each painting is created individually in oils and is an original, one-of-a-kind work.I also host the television series “Painting the Island with Michael Schutte,” in which I share my passion for painting and the remarkable nature and wildlife of Vancouver Island.
