What drives me is difficult to pinpoint, but it is linear insofar as the last work drives the next one, and each is a step towards resolving the question of what that section of work is about. In that way, it is both compulsive and a logical progression. The constant subject is the use of non-hierarchical space, and as the works progress, they explore and expand different spatial relationships using different devices (colour, texture, shape, etc.). After leaving art school in 1971, I began making art full-time. In 1973, I had a one-person show at the Jack Wendler Gallery and exhibited regularly until 1990. In 1976, I began exploring the use of figuration in a non-hierarchical space. From 1999 to 1990, I worked in collaboration with another artist, Jo Baer. These paintings were shown widely in major galleries across Europe and America. I worked on other projects up to 2025, but have again taken up watercolour, returning to where I left off with the large Oil on Canvas paintings of the 80s. I wrote about this period in 2007 in an article published on Medium - entitled ‘What makes a good art dealer’. From 1986, I became involved in various projects across the arts, and later as a software engineer and entrepreneur. I picked up making images full-time around 5 years ago, initially through photography. This activity somehow drove me back to making paintings, which, in so many ways, picked up where I left off in the 80s. Over the last two years, I have completed 50+ watercolour paintings to exhibition standard. Most are 20 x 32 inches, all are painted on heavy (300 lb) watercolour paper.
