Year (2024) Original Oil Painting by Ryan Louder

Year is a landscape format original oil painting on canvas, 102 x 65 cm, by London artist Ryan Louder.

A horizontal form lies at the centre, lit from inside with blue white light, a body if you want it to be. Its mass comes from the marks around it, not from any outline. Dark brown and violet grey close in from both sides, a crouching presence at the left, a rounded mass and one small gesture of blue at the right, and the top of the canvas lifts toward a yellowish green that might be daylight arriving from a long way off.

No clean surface survives in this one, every inch is worked. It behaves like a scene being recovered rather than observed, lit at the centre, uncertain everywhere else, the way a whole year feels when you try to hold it all at once.
