Verdigris (2026) Original Mixed-media Painting by Charles BEALL

Verdigris is the green patina that forms on copper and bronze as they weather. Here it covers the ground: broad rays of deep green and dark slate fan out from behind the centre, their surfaces mottled and shimmering like oxidised metal. Set over them, a frame of copper-toned wooden blocks encloses a field of deep magenta, its surface crackled and worn like old leather. At the centre, three small squares of gold leaf stack upward, the one element that hasn't aged.

The work sets the patina and the metal it comes from side by side: copper that has weathered to green, copper that still glows, and gold, which never tarnishes at all. The radiating background gives the quiet central panel a sense of something held in place, like a relic in a reliquary or a doorway with light behind it.
