Painful as it is most artists have to accept that they are unworthy to even squeeze paint from a tube used by the, recently deceased, David Hockney. This is particularly galling because much of Hockney's style was seemingly maddeningly simple. His landscapes in particular mostly comprised some random splodges of paint with detail provided by some dots and squiggles. You might assume it was the work of a child, albeit a very sophisticated one. A lot of his landscape work was done on an iPad which produced effects impossible to recreate with paintbrushes but, even so, no artist I have ever seen, including myself, has ever regurgitated anything like the unique work Hockney came up with. This picture of the canal round the corner of my house is the best I can do. Not quite a tribute to Hockney but now he sadly will only be producing work in That Great Big Studio In The Sky it will give us mere mortals down here a sporting chance to catch up with his earthly genius.
