Some paintings start with a search for meaning. This one started with simply looking up.

Grey light, silver spray drifting like rain across a field of green - the canvas holds the exact temperature of relief after a long, exhausting heat finally breaks. Roses appear here too, but they've given up their usual insistence on being seen. Painted in the same green as the leaves surrounding them, they fold into the composition rather than standing apart from it.

There's a particular kind of attention that doesn't need to hunt for inspiration — the kind that comes from sitting on a balcony surrounded by gardens, watching ordinary green do something quietly remarkable.
