Desire is an ambivalent experience—a driving force that blurs everything around us and focuses our attention on the object of desire. Yet that object is not always clearly defined or even attainable, making it an easy source of frustration. Desiring disrupts the stability of identity, dissolves our boundaries, and exposes us to the risk of losing control entirely. It can be both movement and stasis at once. In humans, desire is mediated by imagination, culture, memory, and language; unlike animal desire, therefore, it can become entirely abstract. Yet beneath this symbolic level, there always lies an instinctual foundation.
